My Mom. The Photographer Before Me. | San Diego Photography

Instagram basically is one of my favorite apps ever. It's helped me document the little moments so much better than Facebook, this blog, and the other big memory-making giants.

With that said, after Vegas, I visited my Mom in San Diego... well, by the end of our trip, I got her to get on Instagram, to purchase her dream lens (aka the Beast... see below), and to fall in love with Lightroom. Digital era is HERE.

You see, my Mom was a film photographer back in the day. I grew up with Ansel Adams on the walls (yes, the obsession with black and white started young) and with my Mom's camera in front of us all of the time. But with the advent of digital cameras, she held tight to film for the longest time. I didn't really understand it. Come on, Mom! Digital is AH-MAZING and practical! She finally got her first digi-cam a few years ago and fell in love.

But the tables turned... I started craving film. I wanted to go back and experiment the one art form that I grew up around. I wanted the excitement of not knowing immediately what I was capturing (despite the anxiousness accompanying it). And hey, let's be real. I still want to be Ansel Adams long-lost lovechild. ;)

Well, I went to San Diego not only to visit my Mom and other family, but to relearn the art of film. From the gal who got me to where I am today.

We did a lot of personal film assignments, but I'm still practicing and won't be revealing progress just yet (if you're a friend of mine on Facebook, you'll see 5 out of the 72 exposures that were decent and up to my greenhorn standards. LOL). But in my camera family, I now have a "new" Nikon N90s and 85mm 1.4 (manual focus) to help me get to where I see myself artistically.

With that in mind, these images ARE my Mom (digital, of course). They are now my most recent images of her to date... so that makes me happy.

Mom, thank you so much for developing all of that crazy 110 film of mine as a kid. For letting me wear a Kodak Star camera around my neck with the bright yellow cord... I thought/knew I looked cool/ridiculous. For indirectly encouraging me to be my stuffed animals' paparazzi. And for validating that my art skills as a child were worthy of being showcased. Love you, and now go be beautiful! :)

[Okay, I had to throw in a duck photo because this duck looks SO HAPPY. It makes me smile every time I see it!! :D]
