Cocoa and Cozy | A Photo-Fam Christmas

It's been one crazy busy year, and I wasn't the only one who felt it. Nearly everyone I talked to was just worn out. 2013 was an amazing year, but whew, winter couldn't come soon enough! When photo-fam started telling me the little inklings of "oh my gosh long year," I knew this year's Christmas party should just be something cozy, very low-key, and just overall relaxing.

... thus Cocoa & Cozy was born! Donning the jammies (a big personal theme this season), everyone came decked out in their coziest to partake of the hot cocoa bar and tasty treats. Because it was just a continuing sign of this year with busyness, we were missing some of our beloved photo-fam, but we had a great time just hanging out, making snowflakes, and playing ridiculous cotton ball games.

Veronica and Heather dominated in the expert snowflake making game while we had some intense snowball scoopin' from everyone.

I honestly didn't take many photos this year, and I'm glad I didn't. It allowed me to really enjoy the moments with everyone and not have to worry about typical photographer worries of camera settings and lighting. 2014 is my year to enjoy more moments, in the moment.

But I did get some hilarious captures on my iPhone because the Snowball Scoop game was HILARIOUS.

The Language of Flowers and Friendship

Last Friday, I celebrated my fourth wedding anniversary. It's a surreal year because four years ago, we were merely excited visitors to Williamsburg to become husband and wife. And now, four years later, we have made our dream come true of living where we married. The very fact that I can drive 20 minutes and be on Duke of Gloucester Street squeezes my heart like something fierce.

Personally, 2013 has been an incredible year as well as it was also the year of the big 3-0. I just know my thirties will be the best years of my life, so it was wonderful having my loved ones all together at our new home to kick off this new decade. And even though I said "no gifts," some friends and photo-fam particularly spoiled me. I could dive into a ton of excited details about those, but there's one in particular that had me sobbing and why I feel so passionately about my brides' and their florals, professionally.

Call it my love of the Victorian, but I do believe even today's flowers are loaded with meaning and thought. And it's no wonder why I have quite a few florist friends... I'm obsessed with what they do and the art they create. It's a lost language on our modern times, but I like to pretend it still exists. :)

So when Mary, Shannon, and Piper showed up with one of their signature Palette of Petals clear floral bags to my birthday shindig, it wasn't but a second later that I realized what was in there.

Dotted with pinecones, dusty miller, and a mixture of lovely white blooms, there it was. I looked at it, I looked at Mary, and back at it again... and the knowledge that a friend would craft something like this with so much thought and artistry started the waterworks. It was my dream wedding bouquet.

Over the years of knowing each other, Mary remembered my obsession with anemones and the silvery leaf of dusty miller, she remembered the pinecones and my dislike for white roses, she knew my love of teal. But the main heart-strung chord, she knew if I could have changed one thing about my dream wedding, it was my bouquet.

And here it was in the flesh, better than I could have ever imagined.

Because of the delicate nature of flowers, I wanted to make sure I captured it on film before I preserved it. And because me being me, there is a bit of symbolism behind the little details. I knew I didn't want to wear my gown again since I wasn't wanting to recreate my wedding day (I loved it as is!), rather, I chose to incorporate my wedding colors of navy blue. The wedding shoes represent the past, the cameo represents the present (as it was a gift from Rusty when we were in Italy at a real cameo workshop). With the help of Mom, we went out to our little backyard (our first Williamsburg home) and made some camera magic!

After this trip down memory lane, I feel so strongly about the power of visuals to help us cherish our wedding day years down the road. I want to proclaim to all husbands that beyond a typical floral arrangement, I think all ladies should have a Wedding Bouquet Part Deux sometime in their marriage. Seriously, can we make this a thing? :)

Thank you for being in our life, Mary and Shannon. Your love, friendship, and geek-out sessions mean so much to me. Cat family fur-ever. And super thanks to my Mom for "second shooting" this lil bouquet shoot for me!

2013 Wayside Wedding Professionals Holiday Party

Every Christmas, the Event Professionals of Wayside Village Shoppes ring in the holiday season with all the bells and whistles. With a chance to showcase new products, yummy treats, and new neighbors and offices and of course, to celebrate the year's wedding season, the Wayside Wedding Village gets jolly and bright, and this year, with masks! You all know I'm a total sucker for themes and definitely had visions of Phantom dancing in my head. :)

Thanks to Antonia Christianson Events, Boardwalk Photo Booths, Isha Foss Events, Kristal and Rev. Ken Lane, RSVP Stationery, and Sweetwater Cuisine for bringing the community together with a fab shindig! (DJ Taylor Haycox, Ice Art, Patti Cakes, Stage Right Lighting, and Terebinth also made tasty and beautiful contributions!)

Behind the Name.

"How could I possibly join them on to the little bit (two inches wide) of ivory on which I work with so fine a brush, as produces little effect after much labour?"
- Jane Austen, letter to her nephew, James Edward Austen-Leigh

Since I was a young'un, I loved naming things. Not to show ownership, but because there was always a story or meaning behind each and every name. Squishy Bunny was Squishy Bunny because he was, well, squishy. Melvin my dinosaur stuffed animal was Melvin because of his red-striped hat and fancy red scarf. All of my stuffed animals had names, and each had purpose in my life.

When it came time to naming my business almost 5 years ago, I knew I didn't want to be Chelsea LaVere Photography. It just wasn't me. At the time, I was transitioning from my maiden name and both names carried histories upon histories of people before me. Neither name was the heart of who I am individually.

At the heart, I wanted a personal connection. I wanted to operate a low volume business model. And I wanted something that spoke through time. ... and to me, that was Jane Austen. 18th-19th Century British Literature was my concentration in college, and so I had dedicated 4 years of study with Austen either in the background or foreground. There was no escaping her, and therefore she lodged herself permanently in my way of thinking and in my heart.

My best friend Elaine and I were sitting on the couch when it hit. I have to give credit to her because we were throwing out so many different Jane Austen references a la Google. And then we read that quote.

I could spout intellectual meaning behind this quote, but I think AustenBlog says it best. :)

The “little bit (two inches wide) of ivory” was a metaphorical reference; Jane was describing a pocket diary that was made of sheafs of ivory bound together. The owner would write little notes to herself in pencil, which could later be erased after being transferred to a more permanent medium. She meant that her works were on a smaller scale; in another letter she talked about her novels being about “four or five families in a country village.” In a time when romantic novels on the grand scale, what Walter Scott referred to as “the big Bow-wow strain,” were in vogue, no doubt Jane’s novels would seem to many to be impossibly small in scope; however, we submit that Jane purposely worked on that intimate scale, and not because she felt herself incapable of more; she simply preferred it, and felt it best. - AustenBlog

So there you have it! Though I'm quite pale and work with lovely brides wearing all shades of white, Bit of Ivory Photography has roots in my English-major past. :)

Arriving in Williamsburg...

It's time to reveal the big one! The LaVeres are changin' zip codes and headed to the other side of Hampton Roads!

Rusty has been transferred to a Yorktown clinic to serve a new community with his patient care skills, and seeing as there really is no relocation crazies with Bit of Ivory Photography (beyond the task of having to register for a new city biz license)... it's a great new adventure in store for us. The idea of moving to the *really* historical part of Hampton Roads is a dream. Four years ago, we were married in the Historic Area, and now that Historic Area will be our backyard. :) To most, it's probably no surprise (e.g., "I thought you lived there already because of the amount of times you talk about it?!" or "You're up there all the time!") especially with the amount of out-of-town brides I meet in Williamsburg as a halfway point to discuss wedding awesomeness.

My little old soul has always felt at home there, and I'm ecstatic that we have the opportunity to still stay in the area AND get all soul-comfy in a beautiful new home.

A few Q's...
* Will you still come to the Southside?
Of course! I'll still be down here often for meetings/events (and as often as I've been going up to Williamsburg in the past years)... and of course, when I'm shooting weddings in Virginia Beach/Chesapeake/general Southside. Hampton Roads is Hampton Roads! :)

* Any new travel fees?
Same as usual. :)

* How excited are you?
YAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAY!

* When I'm shooting on the Peninsula, you'll have a guest room for me, right? ;)
Oh my gosh, we are so excited to have TONS more room when we move. Since we'll be moving into a real HOUSE, more room for us, more room for you. ;) I'm sure there will be a golden pineapple decor piece somewhere in our house to showcase the colonial spirit of hospitality. If you find it, maybe you'll get a cookie. lol

* Did you really make your cats wear colonial gear?
I'll keep that mystery going.

And heck yeah. You KNOW I'm going to get a fancy return address stamp for my mail. I've been dreaming of this for years! Watch out, envelopes! ;)

Yarnia | A Cat Birthday Party

Back in May, I was determined to put together a birthday party. But not just any birthday party... a birthday party for one of my furbabies. Pickles Barrington will be turning one at the end of August, so that spoiled little kitty obviously needed some more spoiling with her very own shindig. Yes, I am THAT crazy cat mom. :)

And so Yarnia happened. Back at Christmas, one of my brides gave me the cutest cupcake decorating kit with kittens and crazy yarn balls on them... and that pretty much served the inspiration for the theme. So, Heather, this is really because of you! hahah!

I kid you not that this cat knew exactly what was going on because she was all up in the party happenings. If you follow her Facebook page, you'll know she's not really a normal cat. And that's not just my mommie goggles! :) Her extroverted personality wins the hearts of all who meet her... and I'm just incredibly grateful that we were gifted with such an amazing part of our lives.

To give back, the craft I set up was homemade catnip mice à la Martha Stewart that guests either took home for their own kitties or made to be donated to VBSPCA (where PB's sister Marmalade O'Hoolihan came from). And for the record, I'm just getting it out there that I'm calling Caitlin or Stefani to make my demos next time. They put mine to shame-- in skill and time needed to complete one mouse! ;)

Special Notes:
* Rusty made a PB slideshow that played during the party. I won't lie... kinda majorly teared up when I saw baby Pickles.
* Stef wore purple and a little cat pin.
* When I got home from Massachusetts, Rusty came to the airport bearing kitty stickers, so of course, I had to put them on the make-and-take bags.
* Elaine made the meatballs, and Veronica made the whoa amazing yarn ball cake pops. I big puffy heart my culinary-gifted friends!
* I made the yarn backdrop but Pickles made sure to put her own special touch as we had to reinforce to the wall so she wouldn't drag it away. :)
* You can follow #pbyarnia on Instagram to see more party photos by others!
* It was funny to watch Marmalade because she really just watched the whole day unfold. She was simply content just observing everyone and PB, and it made me smile. My lil introverted kitty still had fun.
